Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
