On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an bold start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
