The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the entire text from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in greeting him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. Then, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, risks, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as production continues.
